DESCRIPTION:The County of Prince Edward will host three public information centres (PICs) to share the initial list of municipal properties being considered for an organics management facility. \nThe meeting schedule is: \n\nTuesday\, March 19\, 5:30-7:30 pm\, North Marysburgh Town Hall (2699 County Road 8\, Waupoos)\nThursday\, March 21\, 5:30-7:30 pm\, Sophiasburgh Town Hall (2771 County Road 5\, Demorestville)\nWednesday\, March 27\, 5:30-7:30 pm\, Prince Edward Community Centre (375 Picton Main Street)\n\nAttendees at the PICs will have the chance to provide comments on the properties and the criteria used to evaluate them. Those comments will be a fundamental part of the evaluation process. \nIn 2022\, Council directed staff to prepare a study for a municipal organics management facility. The municipality is exploring this option in order to decrease reliance on external management sites and reduce the fixed costs associated with disposing of organics. These costs will increase in coming years due to growth and inflation. \nThe study will evaluate options for managing organic waste on a County-operated site. The study will evaluate several properties currently owned by the municipality as potential sites for operating a compost facility. The study will look at the requirements for developing a composting facility\, potential impacts to people and the environment\, possible technology choices\, and cost and make recommendations for a path forward. \nFollowing the PICs\, staff and the consultant for this study will complete the evaluation\, considering the feedback received at the PICs. DESCRIPTION:The third annual Sophiasburgh Trash bash will take place from Friday\, November 3 until Sunday\, November 5. \nResidents are welcome to participate by collecting litter in parks\, greenspaces\, and roadsides in Sophiasburgh Ward. Waste collected can be deposited throughout the weekend in the bin located at Northport Park. \nThe event will conclude on Sunday\, November 5 with a barbeque and refreshments served in Northport Park. \nThe Sophiasburgh Recreation Committee and the Demorestville Women’s Institute are sponsoring the clean-up event with support from the municipality. \nPrizes will be awarded in a variety of categories including Best Group Effort\, Best Adult Solo Effort\, Best Youth Collection\, Family Showing Community Spirit\, and Weirdest Object Found. SUMMARY:Open House: Tree Planting Plan - White Pines Wind Project
DESCRIPTION:The County of Prince Edward will be undertaking a project to replant trees in areas where trees were removed or impacted by the cancelled White Pines Wind Project (WPD). \nThe County’s arborist investigated areas that were disturbed as part of the WPD project including Crowes Road\, Royal Road and Maypul Layn Road to determine their suitability for tree planting. \nAfter considering all factors the recommended approach for Royal Road and Maypu Layn Road is to plant approximately 25 larger caliper trees (45 mm) this fall. A contractor will plant these trees. \nTree species selected for Royal Road and Maypul Layn Road will adhere to diversity requirements set out in the County’s Tree Management and Preservation Policy and be suitable the local conditions. \nResidents are invited to an open house to discuss the locations and tour the proposed plan on Wednesday\, August 30 between 5 pm and 6 pm. Those interested in attending are invited to meet with staff at 1071 Royal Road. Please note that seating will not be provided and attendees are asked to bring their own chairs if required.

SUMMARY:Bakker Road Planting Program
DESCRIPTION:The County of Prince Edward is looking for volunteers to help plant pollinator-friendly gardens and naturalized areas at the end of Bakker Road on Monday\, August 21. \nThe municipality is carrying out this work with funding provided by the Canadian Wildlife Federation. This work will have a positive impact on the local and migrating populations of pollinators and other flora and fauna found in the area. \nAnyone who is passionate about environmental stewardship and sustainability is welcome to join staff\, local residents\, and members of the County Garden Club. SUMMARY:Workshop: Spotted Lanternfly Detection and Reporting
DESCRIPTION:The focus of this workshop is the spotted lanternfly\, an invasive pest spreading in nearby U.S. states\, with populations as close to Canada as Buffalo\, New York. Although not currently established in Canada\, if spotted lanternfly were to establish\, it could cause immense damage to Ontario grapevines\, tender fruit orchards\, hops\, parks\, and forests. \nPresented by the Invasive Species Centre\, this workshop will provide training on key information and tools to identify and report spotted lanternfly and its preferred plant host\, tree-of-heaven\, an invasive plant that is widespread throughout southern Ontario. \nThis in-person workshop is free of cost and is taking place on Thursday\, August 3\, 2023. \nAdvance registration is required: click here. \nThere are a limited number of registrations available\, so be sure to secure your place as soon as possible!

DESCRIPTION:Quinte Waste Solutions has published the 2023 calendar for household hazardous waste disposal events. Events will take place in April\, June\, August and October. \nCounty residents can drop household hazardous and electronic waste free of charge. The event takes place at 75 County Road 1 (Sandy Hook Road). \nHousehold hazardous waste can be found in almost every room of your home. These products\, if thrown in the garbage or poured down the drain\, can have negative effects on the environment including an impact on groundwater and surface water such as creeks\, rivers\, and lakes. \nClick here to see a full list of items that are accepted at mobile household hazardous waste mobile drop-off events. \nPlease note that used motor oil and scrap metal are not accepted at QWS mobile drop off events. Motor oil must be dropped at the hazardous waste depot in Belleville. Operating hours are available on the Quinte Waste Solutions website.

DESCRIPTION:Prince Edward County recognizes the benefits of composting organics. particularly the cost benefits composting at home can have on the overall waste management budget. \nIn support of this\, the County is giving away a limited number of composters to the public to support the most efficient means of managing organics waste; Back yard composting. A select number of these composters can be reserved online on a first come first serve basis. \nReserved composters will not be retained beyond the giveaway day. \nThe remaining available composters will be available for in person pickup at the works garage located at 115 Lake Street in Picton. \nComposters will be available on a first come first serve basis. \nThose participating are asked to provide the location where the composter will be installed. \nA demonstration and home composting guide will be provided to those interested. \nLearn more about backyard composting \n

Using soil and plants\, rain gardens celebrate rain as an essential element\, rather than directing it away into pipes and sewers. \nRain gardens offer a way for us all to play an active role in improving the aquatic health of our local creeks and waterways\, while also recharging PEC’s depleted aquifer. These special gardens help to reduce the increasingly common problems of flooding and drainage issues and lessens the volume of water that enters our local storm drain systems.

DESCRIPTION:The County is excited to announce an inaugural mulch giveaway program at the South Marysburgh landfill.  The program uses the large quantities of brush the County receives at the waste sites. The intent of the program is to reduce disposal costs\, improve waste diversion through beneficial re-use\, and to provide residents with the beneficial mulch product. \nThe program will commence on Saturday October 15\, 2022. Mulch will be available while supplies last between 8 am and 4 pm during regular operations of the landfill.  The program will remain in operation each Saturday while supplies last. \nThe mulch giveaway is self-serve. Residents who wish to participate will need to bring their own containers/trailers and shovels/pitch forks.

DESCRIPTION:Prince Edward County is partnering with Tree Canada and the LCBO to host a tree planting event at the Wilkinson Memorial Park in Waupoos. \nThe plantings will take place Saturday\, October 1 at 10 am. \nThe planting event will be part of a larger planting effort that includes a tree planting event by Tree the County and Home Hardware occurring at the same location. \nThere will be a variety of different sizes and types of trees and shrubs to be planted around the park. Community members who wish to join in and help beautify the park are welcome to participate. SUMMARY:Community Trees - Seedling Giveaway 2022
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Quinte Conservation Authority\, the municipality is giving away seedlings to homeowners to improve tree cover throughout the County.  Home owners who have experienced tree loss due to the emerald ash borer are particularly encouraged to participate. The giveaway is the launch of the recently approved Adopt-a-Tree Program. \nTrees will be made available on a first come first serve basis. DESCRIPTION:Quinte Waste Solutions has published the 2022 calendar for household hazardous waste disposal events. Events will take place in April\, June\, August and October. \nCounty residents can drop household hazardous waste free of charge. The event takes place at 75 County Road 1 (Sandy Hook Road). \nHousehold hazardous waste can be found in almost every room of your home. These products\, if thrown in the garbage or poured down the drain\, can have negative effects on the environment including an impact on groundwater and surface water such as creeks\, rivers\, and lakes. \nClick here to see a full list of items that are accepted at mobile household hazardous waste mobile drop-off events. \nPlease note that used motor oil and electronic waste are not accepted at QWS mobile drop off events. Motor oil must be dropped at the hazardous waste depot in Belleville\, while electronic waste can be dropped at the Belleville or Trenton depots. Operating hours are available on the Quinte Waste Solutions website.
